Performing a System Update Using ADB

Use ADB to perform a system update.
  1. Connect the device to a host computer using the Rugged Charge/USB cable or by inserting the device into the 1-Slot USB/Charge Only Cradle.
  2. Go to
    Settings
    .
  3. On Android 11, touch
    System
    Advanced
    Developer options
    .
  4. On Android 13, touch
    System
    Developer options
    .
  5. Slide the
    USB debugging
    switch to the
    ON
    position.
  6. If the device and host computer are connected for the first time, the
    Allow USB debugging?
    dialog box with the
    Always allow from this computer
    check box displays. Select the check box, if required.
  7. Touch
    OK
    .
  8. On the host computer, navigate to the
    platform-tools
    folder and open a command prompt window.
  9. Type
    adb devices
    .
    If the device number does not appear, ensure that the ADB drivers are installed properly.
  10. Type
    adb reboot recovery
    .
  11. Press
    Enter
    .
    The System Update installs (progress appears as a percentage in the Command Prompt window) and then the System Recovery screen appears on the device.
  12. Press
    Volume Up
    and
    Volume Down
    to navigate to
    Apply upgrade from ADB
    .
  13. Press
    Enter
    .
    The System Recovery screen appears on the device.
  14. Press
    Power
    .
  15. On the host computer command prompt window type
    adb sideload <file>
    .
    where: <file> = the path and filename of the zip file.
  16. Press
    Enter
    .
    The System Update installs (progress appears as a percentage in the Command Prompt window) and then the System Recovery screen appears on the device.
  17. Press
    Power
    to reboot the device.
