Before Starting the Upgrade Process

The
Resonate RFID Reader Management
 upgrade process is straightforward and follows the same steps as your initial installation.

Requirements

To perform the upgrade process, you need:
  • The new version of the installer package (
    trifecta-installer-k8s-<VERSION>.<BUILD NUMBERr>.tar.gz
    ). The package comes in the
    resonate-<VERSION>.tar.gz
     file that you receive from Zebra.
  • Root or sudo access to your primary node.
  • Your original installation parameters (for example, the hostname (FQDN) and SMTP settings).
  • 15-30 minutes, depending on the speed of your
    Resonate server
     and how fast it can download the package.

Important Details

Before you start, note the following:
  • Downtime: During the upgrade,
    Resonate
     is temporarily unavailable, but the readers will continue their current operations. After the upgrade, the readers should automatically reconnect, at which point they will check for new queued commands from the updated installation.
  • Data safety: Your data and configurations will be preserved.
  • Rollback: Keep your previous installer package as a backup.1
  • Extra step: After upgrading
    Resonate
    , update the Resonate Agent on the readers using the
    Resonate
     web interface. You can select up to 100 readers to update at a time. Although updates are performed in parallel, network limitations can restrict the number of simultaneous downloads. Updating a single reader should take a maximum of 2 minutes; however, depending on network limitations, it might take anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes for all readers to complete. After a reader is upgraded, it resumes its previous operations.
    When updating the Resonate Agent, your or your partner's software solution that consumes tag read data will not be connected to the WebSocket. When rebooting a reader, the software solution will not be able to access the reader until it powers back on. While a reader's firmware is being updated, the reader continues reading tags as normal until it needs to reboot to complete the firmware upgrade.

Migrating from MotionWorks

To migrate from MotionWorks RFID Reader Management to
Resonate RFID Reader Management
, an upgrade is not possible. Instead, you can import its data and RFID readers. Prepare different machines on which to install
Resonate
, install
Resonate
 on these machines, and then import the data and RFID readers. Refer to the migration section in the
Resonate RFID Reader Management
 User Guide for information.
1 If upgrading from
Resonate RFID Reader Management
 2.0.0 or 2.0.1, apply the 2.0.2 hotfix before upgrading to ensure rollback is possible. The hotfix resolves an issue with rolling back to version 2.0.
