Bluetooth Security Levels

This section provides information about Bluetooth security levels.
Bluetooth Security Levels
  • Low Bluetooth Security - This security level uses the Just Works pairing method, requiring no authentication or encryption.
  • Medium Bluetooth Security - The medium security setting requires Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) protection and encryption with acceptable user interaction. If one of the devices is incapable of Secure Simple Pairing, this will result in a pin code exchange, creating a combination of link key and encrypted connection.
  • High Bluetooth Security - This level 4 security level requires MITM protection and 128-bit encryption when linking and generating encryption keys with acceptable user interaction. If one of the devices is incapable of Secure Connections, this will result in a link disconnection with the reason code of
    Authentication Failure
. There is no backward compatibility with legacy devices when in this mode.
  • When the Medium or High security level is enabled and paired with an Android device, a pop-up displays on the terminal with a randomly generated passkey value. The passkey is entered via alphanumeric barcode scanning for secure pairing.
  • For the alphanumeric barcodes to be scanned for the pairing, see Alphanumeric Barcodes.
  • If the passkey entry is canceled from the phone, the scanner remains in the passkey entry mode for 30 seconds before timing out. To exit the passkey entry mode, scan the Cancel barcode or any other barcode (such as the End of Message barcode).
